Tiana is a fictional character and the protagonist of Walt Disney Pictures' forty-ninth animated feature film The Princess and the Frog, released in 2009. Created by directors Ron Clements and John Musker, who also wrote the film's story and screenplay, Tiana is voiced by American actress Anika Noni Rose, while her original design was animated by supervising animator Mark Henn.
Based on Princess Emma, the protagonist of E. D. Baker's novel The Frog Princess, which was inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Frog Prince", Tiana is a hardworking waitress who dreams of opening her own restaurant in honor of her late father. After kissing a prince who's been turned into a frog, Tiana becomes a frog herself and must find a way to turn back human before it's too late. Described by Empire magazine as "a hard-headed heroine who works hard and displays a focus and drive", Tiana is hardworking, determined, intelligent and strong-willed. The ninth Disney Princess, Tiana is the first to be of African American heritage.
Reviews of Tiana's character have been mostly positive, with critics praising her hardworking personality and contemporary goals and values. Reception towards her ethnicity, however, has been rather mixed, further driven by speculation and controversy. While some critics praised Disney's decision to make Tiana their first black princess, while others scrutinized it, calling into question the studio's timing and reasoning behind it.

[edit]Story
Tiana was based on Princess Emma, the protagonist of E. D. Baker's novel "The Frog Princess", which was inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Frog Prince".[1] Directors Ron Clements and John Musker considered Baker's novel "a twist" on the original Grimm fairy tale.[2] "In that story the princess kissed the frog and instead of him turning into a prince she turned into a frog and then the two sort of went on an adventure together."[2]
