On the following pages you will find biographical portraits of the 136 people who died at the Berlin Wall. They are the results of the research project “Fatalities at the Berlin Wall, 1961 – 1989.” To reconstruct the circumstances of each death, archival records, in particular from the border troops and the Ministry for State Security, were evaluated along with the investigation findings from the Border Guard Trials that took place in the 1990s. Since information derived from official documents is limited in scope, contact was made to family members and friends to learn more about how the people lived and what motivated them to flee. This made it possible to include personal memories and family recollections in many of the biographical essays.
